Washington Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Lilliwaup, WA for two kinds of buyers: contractors working a schedule and homeowners finishing one project. Both end up asking the same question about the same material.

That material is 5/8 minus, the crushed rock with its fines left in that packs hard and sheds water. It is the surfacing course most Puget Sound lowland work starts from, and it is where a Lilliwaup order usually begins.

Ground and Conditions in Lilliwaup

Glacial ground across the Puget Sound lowland leaves a dense till cap over sand, with silt and clay below that. The lower till is hard enough that crews working it call it hardpan.

Water behaves badly on that profile. Rain soaks the loose upper soil, hits the till, and stops, so the water table sits close to the surface all winter rather than draining away.

A thin base shows the problem first. Saturation softens the material from underneath, and a drive that was firm in August can rut in February.

That is saturation, not frost, because the ground here seldom freezes deep.

The fix is to take the water sideways to daylight instead of letting it sit. A footing drain or curtain drain running to a low point does that work, and it needs washed rock with no fines to keep its voids open.

Winter rain also perches where outwash sand meets clay, which is what puts bluffs and cut slopes on the landslide maps. The wet season runs October through April, and exposed soil has to be stabilized within two days in that window.

Materials for Lilliwaup Projects

Bedding under pavers and flatwork is the work that decides whether a patio or walkway stays flat. The bedding layer has to compact tight and stay put, which is a different job from drainage stone.

Stone Screenings, also called crusher dust or 3/8 minus, is the fine end of the minus range and the standard setting bed for pavers and flagstone. It compacts rather than drains, so it holds a paver steady underfoot.

Walkway Gravel, sold as 1/4 minus or pathway gravel, is the next size up. It packs down tight on garden paths and side yards where you want a firm walking surface.

Where a bed needs to drain instead of compact, washed stone takes over. 3/8" Crushed Stone goes into paver joints and permeable paver setting beds, and #8 Crushed Stone does the same work at a similar size.

Below the bedding, the structural course carries the load. 1 1/4 Minus, or CSBC, has a larger top size and fewer fines than 5/8 minus, so it stays workable on soft wet ground.

5/8 Minus, the CSTC grade, caps that base under driveways, parking pads and shed slabs. It is the Washington default surfacing course for a reason: fines left in, so it packs hard.

Drain Rock, or 7/8 clean, is the washed rock for footing drains and infiltration trenches. With no fines in it, it keeps the voids that perched water needs to move through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Lilliwaup, WA

What gravel is best for a driveway in Lilliwaup?

It depends on what the drive sits on. On soft wet ground, start with 1 1/4 Minus as the structural course, then cap it with 5/8 Minus, which packs hard and sheds water. Both are minus products, so the fines stay in and the material compacts. Where the drive needs to drain rather than hold, washed stone such as Drain Rock is the better choice.

How much material will my project need?

That depends on the area you are covering and the depth you are building to, and both are yours to set. Each product page carries a calculator so you can size the load from your own figures. Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and you choose the amount at checkout.

Do you deliver outside Lilliwaup itself?

Yes. We deliver across Washington, and the surrounding towns and rural addresses around Lilliwaup are covered the same way as addresses in town. If you are not sure whether your address is reachable, send it over and we will confirm before you order.
