Begin with the support course on a Washington shop pad or rail installation when glacial hardpan can hold water close to the topsoil. Railroad Ballast provides an open layer beneath loaded work, with angular stone that interlocks as weight is applied. Water can move through its open structure instead of sitting within the stone course.
West of the Cascades, long rainy stretches can keep the ground wet above hardpan. Conditions east of the mountains differ, but winter freezing still affects site preparation. Make sure drainage has a route away from the work area rather than relying on the stone alone. If the upper course needs to compact into a finer driving surface, use a finer compactable base material above Railroad Ballast.
