Minimal organic matter

A contractor setting up a Washington shop pad or reshaping a low yard needs bulk material in place before the finish work begins. Fill Dirt is screened earthen material used to raise grade, fill depressions, and backfill excavated areas. It has limited organic matter, which helps it serve as working ground below later soil or construction materials.

West of the Cascades, water can sit above glacial hardpan, so the site contour should be planned with the drainage layout in mind. Fill Dirt can establish the needed shape around a pad or across a broad low section, but it is not a substitute for a drainage system. Compact it after placement before installing the next base, surface, or soil layer. For lawn or planting areas, finish the shaped fill with topsoil before vegetation is installed.

Common Uses

Site Grading & Preparation

Set the grade before building begins with fill dirt. It helps shape drainage routes, building areas, and landscape contours. This is useful west of the Cascades, where water can collect above glacial hardpan.

Foundation Backfill

Place compactable fill dirt around foundations, retaining walls, and other below-grade work. With little organic matter, it avoids the decomposition and settling common in organic-heavy soils and supports the area over time.

Raising Low Areas

Add fill dirt to low ground where water collects and mud develops. Raising the surface guides runoff away from structures and occupied spaces and can reduce recurring moisture problems.

Hole & Void Filling

Place bulk fill dirt in old pools, unused basements, large holes, and excavation cavities. Compact the material to prepare the area for later building work or lawn installation.

Why Choose Fill Dirt

Bulk Material for Earthwork

Choose fill dirt for large fill and grading work when planting-grade soil is unnecessary. Reserve topsoil for areas where plants will be installed.

Firm Compaction

Fill dirt's mineral material compacts tightly and helps limit settling over time. This matters beneath structures, pavement, and soil placed above it.

Stable Grades

Fill dirt has little organic content, so it avoids the breakdown and shrinkage common in organic soils. It helps the completed grade retain its form during the project.

Flexible Earthwork Material

Use fill dirt for rough grade work, backfill, or filling open voids. It prepares the ground for subsequent construction and landscape work.
