Crusher run calculator for Washington
Build a pavement-like base with crusher run, calculated for compacted depth rather than an estimate of loose material.
Enter your project dimensions
Crusher run settles 10-15% from its loose truck volume during compaction. Ordering only for the measured depth can leave the finished base half an inch too shallow, so this calculator starts with a +10% allowance selected. You may see it listed as 1 1/4 Minus, CSBC in Washington, or 2 inch minus on some tickets. Each refers to crushed stone that retains its fines, about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, forming a firm surface that tires do not easily displace.
Order for compacted depth
- Find the footprint in feet: multiply lane length by width, or measure the pad sides.
- Choose the required finished compacted depth: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 under trucks.
- For yards, divide cubic feet by 27. Multiply that result by 1.5 for tons, and leave the +10% selected. Specifications refer to rolled depth, not loose depth.
Per-ton coverage
| Compacted depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | ≈ 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | ≈ 54 sq ft |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | ≈ 36 sq ft |
| 8 inches | 41 sq ft | ≈ 27 sq ft |
Best uses and limits
- Driveway base: compact 4-6 inches, then place 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the finished driving layer.
- Budget rural lanes: use crusher run by itself for a drivable surface. Plan for dust in summer and regrading every 2-4 years.
- Paver and slab base: compact 4 inches in 2-inch layers. Use the Paver Base Calculator for the entire paver stack.
- Shed and hot-tub pads need 4 inches on stripped ground and 6 on soft soil.
- Keep it out of a French drain. Its fines help it bind but also retain water, so drainage calls for clean #57 or drain rock.
Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad
For two hundred square feet at 4 inches compacted, calculate 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. With the allowance, order 4 tons. Place and compact half first, then add the remaining half and compact it. Two 2-inch lifts last longer than one 4-inch pour by years. A plate compactor rented for the afternoon costs less than repairing the first pothole. Ruts by the second delivery often show when compaction was skipped.
Delivery details
- Schedule base and surface stone together in one delivery to keep the work moving. Delivery is free either way.
- Have the load tipped at the end farthest from the start, then spread back toward it. On large pads, downhill work saves a full day over spreading uphill.
- Lightly mist each layer before rolling it. Damp crusher run compacts tighter than dry material.
- Set aside a wheelbarrow-load for touchups. Crusher run also works for pothole patches.
How pricing works
Crusher run is generally lower priced than washed, sorted stone because it comes from crusher output. The +10% allowance on a 4-ton order can prevent needing another half-ton delivery. Visit the Crusher Run product page for per-ton pricing, compare Road Base, and order both driveway layers in one free delivery.
