For a shop pad or driveway build, 5/8 Minus belongs below the finished surface, where it takes the bearing work. West of the Cascades, rain can sit over glacial hardpan and leave the ground soft under traffic. The material compacts into a close, stable course that supports vehicle use and equipment access.
Drainage still needs attention around the project, particularly where water cannot move down through hardpan. Install 5/8 Minus over prepared ground, then compact it before continuing with the surface above. This creates a firm layer that helps carry use on wet-side access routes. In the Columbia Basin or Palouse, it can also serve beneath work areas where winter conditions and regular traffic call for a base that holds together rather than remaining loose.

Common Uses
Building Roads and Highways
Place road base between the subgrade and asphalt or concrete pavement. This layer carries vehicle weight and transfers it across the ground below.
Driveways for Heavy Use
Use road base where driveways carry large trucks, trailer-mounted equipment, or ongoing commercial use. It creates a stronger layer that helps limit ruts and surface wear from demanding traffic.
Construction Site Access Roads
Build temporary or permanent jobsite entrances with road base. It creates a firm driving surface for equipment and can help keep site traffic moving during wet weather.
Commercial Parking & Loading Areas
Use road base under commercial parking, loading docks, and industrial work areas that receive daily vehicle and equipment traffic.
Why Choose 5/8 Minus
Maximum Load Capacity
Road base provides a compacted layer for high-load uses, including fully loaded dump trucks and industrial equipment. Its dense structure helps spread weight rather than concentrating it in one spot.
Road Base Material
Choose the size and material your project requires, and confirm the specification called for in your plans.
Performance Through Changing Weather
A correctly placed and compacted road base stays stable through rain, dry spells, and freeze-thaw weather. Tight compaction reduces water movement into the layer, helping avoid the soft spots that can develop in less dense material.
Economical for Large Projects
Road base can be used instead of a paved surface for large access roads, parking spaces, and work yards. It provides a structural base across broad areas.
