In the build, 1 1/4 Minus belongs above the prepared ground and below the surface that carries traffic. West of the Cascades, glacial hardpan can hold water near the surface; farther east, sandy ground and winter freezing create a different set of concerns. Its angular rock and fine material work together when compacted, helping create a stable bed for driveways, shop pads, and access areas.
Do not treat this base as a substitute for drainage where water is trapped on hardpan. Set drainage paths first, then spread 1 1/4 Minus across a graded subgrade and compact it while the material has enough moisture to work together. A carefully prepared layer is especially useful around Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula, where persistent rain can expose weak spots beneath a gravel surface.

Common Uses
Driveway & Parking Subbase
For driveways and parking spots, crusher run can form a compacted layer below the surface. A well-packed base helps vehicle areas resist ruts, settling, and wear, which matters on wet Puget Sound sites.
Patio & Walkway Foundation
Put a compacted crusher run layer below pavers, flagstone, or concrete for a flat base that helps limit movement and settlement. It is a practical starting layer for hardscape work.
Shed & Structure Pads
A compacted crusher run pad gives sheds, hot tubs, gazebos, and other outdoor structures a level footing. The material helps spread the weight and reduce settlement that may affect the structure.
Grading & Site Preparation
For site work, crusher run can level uneven ground, bring up low spots, and set the grade before building begins. After it is compacted, it gives equipment and construction work a stable surface.
Why Choose 1 1/4 Minus
Maximum Compaction
Crusher run combines crushed rock with fine dust. During compaction, the fines occupy open spaces between the stone to form a dense base that helps reduce movement and settlement under weight.
Self-Cementing Action
Moisture and compaction let the fines lock around the larger pieces of stone in crusher run, forming a cohesive layer that hardens with time. That natural bond can reduce the need for extra stabilizers.
Economical Performance
Crusher run combines a range of particle sizes in a material used for construction base layers. Spread and compact it to create support beneath a project.
Base Material Uses
Crusher run can be compacted for driveway, foundation, and structural-base projects. Match the layer depth and compaction to the load and ground conditions at the site.
