5/8 Minus, Sand and Gravel Delivery in Klickitat County, WA

Order gravel, stone and aggregate delivery in Klickitat County, WA online by the ton or by the yard. Washington Rock Supply delivers bulk material across the county and tips it on site.

Start with 5/8 minus. It is the crushed surfacing top course Washington quarries shorten to CSTC, and it packs hard because the fines stay in the mix.

Materials Delivered in Klickitat County

5/8 minus is the Washington default surfacing course. Crushed rock with the fines left in, so it packs hard and sheds water instead of soaking it up.

It works for driveways, parking pads, and shed and shop slabs.

See 5/8 Minus.

Below that top course sits 1 1/4 minus, the crushed surfacing base course, or CSBC. It has a larger top size and fewer fines, so it carries load and stays workable on soft wet ground.

Use it under a drive, parking area or slab. Order it as 1 1/4 Minus.

Choosing the Right Material

Klickitat County spans two ground regions. Around Goldendale, Klickitat, Lyle and Roosevelt you are on windblown loess over Columbia River basalt, and where the Ice Age floods ran, that loess was stripped off and the basalt left bare.

The floods also dumped sand and gravel bars in the coulees and along the rivers. Where that flood gravel sits at the surface, water disappears straight down.

Around White Salmon, Bingen, Trout Lake and Glenwood the ground is different. Thin, stony soil over volcanic and granitic rock on the slopes, with andesite, pumice and ash around the volcanoes.

Skamania County shares that second ground region, so the slopes and valley floors there are the same material. Yakima County and Benton County share the loess and basalt ground instead.

Match the material to the ground. A minus product compacts and holds where you need a surface that stays put.

A clean or washed stone drains where water has to move.

For a washed drainage layer, use drain rock, also called 7/8 clean. It has no fines, so it keeps its voids where a perched water table sits.

For a compacted surface, stay with the minus range. For paver joints and thin bedding, 3/8 clean is the washed, fines-free choice.

Rounded stone behaves differently again. Natural Pea Gravel and river rock will not compact, so edge them where they can wander.

Ground Conditions Across Klickitat County

A thin base fails first. On loess and on flood gravel, a surfacing course laid too shallow ruts, pumps and loses its shape under a loaded truck.

The fix is a structural course under the top course, and the right one is 1 1/4 minus. It carries load and stays workable on soft wet ground.

Water is the other half of it. Parts of the basin take only seven to nine inches of rain a year, so the ground is dry and loose, and the silt sheds water rather than absorbing it when a storm arrives.

On the west slope near the crest, the opposite problem runs. That ground takes 75 to 90 inches a year and sheds it fast off steep ground, which scours road shoulders, ditches and culvert outfalls.

Riprap and large round rock armour those places.

Timing matters too. Eastern Washington treats October 1 through June 30 as its wet weather season for erosion control, and placing and compacting base material stops being practical once snow falls or the ground freezes.

Ground freezes properly here, unlike west of the Cascades, so frost heave in an unbound base is something to design for. The county or city building department sets the frost depth figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Klickitat County

Should I order material by the ton or by the yard?

Both work, and the choice depends on the material and how you are measuring. Order by the ton when weight is the easier figure to work with, or by the yard when you are thinking in volume. Each product page has a calculator to size the load either way.

Which stone is best for drainage in Klickitat County?

Drain rock, also called 7/8 clean, is the washed drainage stone. It has no fines, so it keeps its voids where a perched water table sits on till. For trench backfill and pipe surround, 3/4 clean is the washed counterpart to a minus product, so it drains instead of compacting.

What do I need to have ready for a bulk delivery?

Have the drop spot clear and the approach open. A dump truck tips the load in one pile, so leave room for it where you want the material to sit. Pick your delivery date at checkout when you place the order.
